Works from Iltja Ntjarra Many Hands Art Centre
Benita Clements, Painting near Glen Helen and seeing a UFO!
land/place presents a selection of water-colours by Benita Clements and Mervyn Rubuntja, from the Iltja Ntjarra Many Hands Art Centre in Alice Springs. Recreating landscapes that respond to structural and cultural changes since white settlement, these bright watercolours are testament to tradition, as well the artists’ own experiences of life in community and its ever-changing nature. In the style of the ‘Hermannsburg School’ and their forebear Albert Namatjira, Clements and Rubuntja use the medium of watercolour to preserve intergenerational knowledge and histories, in their own distinct styles.
This show presents the first opportunity to purchase Clements’s paintings, exhibited last year at ACCA’s A Lightness of Spirit is the Measure of Happiness. Rubuntja’s 2018 Telstra award finalist work Mparntwe is a battle ground will also be displayed.
